ARC Needs Auction Items For Starlight Fundraiser | News, Sports, Jobs

For the Animal Refuge Center, the Starlight auction is the biggest fundraiser of the year, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to keep the lights on and the animals in their care housed and healthy. .

But to run an auction you need auction items, and every year more than 100 individual baskets are prepared by the auction elves by November 1 and help collect a significant portion. of the total auction proceeds.

The 27th Annual Starlight Auction will be held on Saturday, November 27 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Sanibel Harbor Marriott Resort, which has hosted the event in most years.

ARC Treasurer Betty Hughes said the event includes at least 100 combinations of baskets, artwork and jewelry, as well as around 20 live items to bid on, which are typically the more expensive.

“Live items are the most expensive, and halfway through the live auction we are making a non-applicable request, which helps pay for the surgical, medical and operational care needs of 400 animals each day. “ said Hugues.

Elves need the public’s help to pick up certain items for gift baskets, things that many retailers are happy to give gift certificates for.

Items needed include gift certificates of $ 25 or more for area restaurants, spas, nail salons, PetSmart or Petco stores, grocery stores and hair salons; Prefabricated baskets containing wine, alcohol, non-perishable food products valued at $ 50 and more; wines, spirits, specialty blends, specialty bar items; Scratch lottery tickets; and medium to large baskets for storing items.

The CRA is also looking for sponsorships, which start at $ 300, which includes two tickets to the auction event. Hughes said the referrals sell well, but they can always use more.

The auction has raised up to $ 245,000 in the past. Last year, with COVID and limited seating, ARC raised around $ 170,000.

This could be the best year ever, said Hughes, as a $ 50,000 match was offered by two people.

If the audience reaches $ 50,000 in auctions, the two anonymous donors will match it.

“It’s exciting. We haven’t had a game for several years due to the economy and COVID. We might expect to break a record,” said Hugues.

Tickets are still available, but sponsors usually get most of the tickets, which is why Hughes suggests buying tickets now.

The collected items can be dropped off at the ARC from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until October 20. Please wear a mask when entering the adoption center or mail the CRA to 18011 Old Bayshore Road, North Fort Myers, FL 33917 or PO Box 62605, Fort Myers, FL 33906.
