At least 100 Muslim women in India have been listed as ‘for sale’ in a fake online auction, sparking massive outrage among the minority community.

A Github app called Bulli Bai – a derogatory Hindi phrase for Muslim women – encouraged users to bid on 100 Muslim women whose images were posted without consent. The app featured many influential Muslim women in India, including lawyers, activists and politicians. Among them was Quratulain Rehbar, a 27-year-old journalist.

“It took me at least two to three hours to process,” she said. BNC News in a January 5 phone call, adding that she was first told about the auction while on a public bus.

Many Muslim women targeted in the attack are said to have criticized the policies pursued by the ruling Bharatiya Janata party led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“[The intent] was to sexually harass, dishonor, humiliate and hate women for speaking out against the government,” Rehbar added.

Rehbar has since deleted her Instagram account and deleted her email from Twitter after receiving several spam messages from men.

Indian police have so far arrested four people aged between 18 and 21 who were behind the app, including engineering student Neeraj Bishnoi. It is believed that he created the application.

Bulli Bai is not the first online app created to harass Muslim women in India. In July 2021, an app called “Sulli Deals” also took publicly available photos of 100 women, created profiles, and tagged them as “deals of the day.”

GitHub, the web platform used to build and host the app, shut down Sulli Deals after receiving complaints, adding that the app violated its policies, according to a declaration.

Online harassment is a growing problem in India. A study 2020 by Amnesty International India found that Muslim women and female politicians outside the ruling Bharatiya Janata party were more likely to be targeted and abused.

The study, which looked at 114,716 tweets mentioning Indian female politicians between March and May 2019, also found that 10.5% of all tweets were problematic and 3.3% were abusive.

Among the problematic or abusive tweets, many contained sexism, misogyny, religious slurs, racism, casteism, transphobia, sexual threats and physical threats.

With this purchase, MS Dhoni will add another iconic car to its extensive collection of cars and motorcycles in its garage.

Although the Land Rover Series 3 is one of the most popular cars in the world with over 4 lakh units manufactured between 1971 and 1985, it is now a rare find. Especially, those that have been restored to their original glory.

Meanwhile, the Land Rover Series 3 was available in three different body styles – 2-door, 2-door pickup and 4-door station wagon.

Engine options include 2.25 liter inline four cylinder petrol engine with 72.41 hp, 2.25 liter inline four cylinder diesel engine with 61.68 hp, larger inline six cylinder petrol engine 85.82 hp 2.6-liter and a slightly more powerful 3.5-liter engine. 91.18 hp V8 petrol engine.

Since the 1970s, the only gearbox option available was the 4-speed manual transmission with a 2-speed transfer case.

Talking about this particular model bought by MS Dhoni, it is a Land Rover Series 3 style 4 door station wagon and it is a very rare model in India. However, the engine specification of the model is not yet known.

From the photos, it looks like the rare vintage model has been painstakingly restored to its original shape.

The beautifully restored Land Rover Series 3 purchased by Dhoni has a two-tone paint scheme where the roof and front windscreen are finished in white and the rest of the body finished in what looks like mustard yellow.

However, elements such as the grille and bumpers are finished in silver, while the exterior mirrors and door handles are finished in black. This creates a nice contrast and the vehicle looks more like a restoration project carried out by the parent company itself.

Now talking about the online auction, the well-known premium used car seller, Big Boy Toyz (BBT) has recently launched the online vintage car auction on its platform.

This particular online auction saw 19 classic cars, including vintage cars from Rolls Royces, Austins, Buicks, Chevrolets, Volkswagens and more.

According to Big Boy Toyz, the online classic car auction started with the Volkswagen Beetle for which bidding started at Rs 1 lakh and went up to Rs 25 lakh.

MS Dhoni buying the Land Rover Series 3 shows once again that India’s world cup winning captain has great taste in his cars and the beautifully restored Land Rover Series 3 will soon be moving to Ranchi.

Moreover, with the new vintage and classic car business, Big Boy Toyz aims to make it a Rs 100 Crore vertical business.

A Delhi court on Friday denied bail for Neeraj Bishnoi, who is one of the defendants in a case involving an app on which more than 100 prominent Muslim women were listed for an “online auction”, Bar and Bench reported. The court said Bishnoi’s act was an “affront to the dignity of women of a particular community and to the communal harmony of society.”

Bishnoi and three others were accused of taking photos of the Muslim women from their social media accounts without permission and posting them on the app to ‘sell’ them as ‘Bulli Bai’ from the day. “Buli” is a pejorative way of referring to Muslim women.

The app, which was hosted on the GitHub web platform, has since been taken down following outrage on social media.

Police objected to Bishnoi’s bail saying they were looking into the digital equipment used to create the application, The Indian Express reported. They also said that he was involved in several cases registered in different police stations in India.

The court said that since the allegation was material and the investigation is still ongoing, there is no basis for bail at this stage. Metropolitan Chief Magistrate Pankaj Sharma said the the app was a “smear campaign» against women, Live Act reported.

“The facts reveal that the accused created [an] application where women journalists, celebrities from [a] A particular community, famous on social media, is being targeted, cast in a bad light for the purpose of insulting and humiliating,” the court order said.

Bishnoi, a resident of Assam, is an engineering student. Earlier this month he was taken into custody for seven days.

He was prosecuted under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on religious grounds and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult a woman’s modesty).

“Online auction” of women

The “Bulli Bai” app was the second attempt in recent months to harass Muslim women in the country by “auctioning” them online.

In July, an app called “Sulli Deals” posted hundreds of images of Muslim women and described them as “deals of the day”.

Noida and Delhi police had registered separate cases in relation to the ‘Sulli Deals’ app but made no arrests until the ‘Bulli Bai’ case came to light earlier in January.

On January 9, Delhi police arrested Aumkareshwar Thakur, who allegedly created the “Sulli Deals” app. He is the first person to be arrested in this case.

How bad can BDA’s corruption get? The answer is very very bad.

Watch this: The recent online corner site auction, which the BDA announced as very successful, was rigged. And the culprits were the planning agency’s own staff who colluded with crooks.

The scam runs in several crores and surfaced earlier this week. BDA Vigilance Wing filed a complaint with Seshadripuram Police on Wednesday.

The scam comes at a particularly difficult time for the state government which had pledged to cleanse the BDA of bad apples and has carried out widely publicized raids to catch the corrupt.

Looks like none of this has deterred the scammers.

The BDA has opted for the online auction of corner sites in several of its housing developments giving reasons such as Covid-19 restrictions, ensuring transparency, breaking the monopoly of middlemen and giving bidders a hotline with BDA officials.

The BDA had set up sites in eight auction housing layouts: Anjanapura, Arkavathi Layout, Banashankari, HBR Layout, JP Nagar, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Layout, Nagarabhavi and Sir M Vishveswaraiah Layout. To participate in the auction, bidders had to log on to eproc.karnataka.gov.in, the state government’s public procurement portal.

The online auctions started between December 8 and 15 and ended between December 23 and 30.

The government had hoped the online auction would be so successful that it would also secure funds for Covid-19 relief work.

But the scammers had a head start. Backed by corrupt BDA staff, they broke into the “foolproof” system by producing bogus challans and bills of sale.

Here’s how the scam worked:

Pretending to be real buyers, the scammers participated in the auction, offered the best deals and succeeded in blocking sites in the 7th block of Vishveswaraiah Layout.

Later, in collusion with corrupt BDA employees, they produced duplicate challans of private banks to show the fictitious payment of the full bid price and obtain the deeds of sale on their behalf, an official said. BDA on condition of anonymity.

In some cases, scammers have changed the location of auction sites. For example, if Vishveswaraiah Layout 8th block sites were to be auctioned, the crooks changed the location to 7th block and also changed the site numbers.

The duplicate challans, files and bank codes were then submitted to BDA officials to show payment of the full bid price and have the sites registered in their name, another official said.

BDA Chairman and MP for Yelahanka, SR Vishwanath, who has pledged to root out corruption from the agency, confirmed the fraud. Talk to DH, he said he had asked the officials to file a complaint with the police about it and expose the culprits.

“We were shocked when we found out that scammers have been breaking into the surefire online action. They have deceived both the BDA and genuine buyers. Three such cases have come to my attention and an investigation internal is underway to determine the extent of the fraud,” he said. said and promised that the culprits would not be unscathed.

He continued: “We will ensure that the BDA does not lose these sites. We have alerted the Office of the Deputy Registrar and blocked the resale of these sites.”

A source said the three bogus bills of sale were from the 7th block and each site was worth Rs 2 crore.

Ryan O’Connor, CEO of Unreserved, said the nearly $34 million seed investment will be used to grow the current workforce of 90 people, mostly in Ottawa, to 160 by the end of the year. ‘year.

Bidding began mid-morning on Thursday for a two-story detached house in southwest Barrhaven. As of 2 p.m., when the online auction closed, the price of the home at 2622 River Mist Rd. had jumped from $665,000 to $857,500. Thirteen unique bidders had submitted a total of 85 bids.

“Twenty-eight hundred people were watching the event,” said Ryan O’Connor, CEO of Unreserved, the Ottawa-based company that developed the online auction software. “A lot of them were people wondering if they should sell their house this way as well.”

O’Connor, 46, had every reason to be enthusiastic. On the same morning, the Ottawa entrepreneur and former amateur boxer revealed his business had secured nearly $34 million in seed investment – the proceeds he will use to grow his current roster of 90, mostly in Ottawa. , to 160 by the end of the year, after an expansion project in Toronto.

Unreserved’s main selling feature – in addition to charging just one percent of the selling price – is an auction platform that allows potential buyers to instantly respond to competing bids for the property in question. A feature allows non-bidders to observe the auction as it unfolds.

“We’re showing the industry there’s a better way,” O’Connor said, referring to the long-standing practice of home sellers collecting offers privately, leaving potential buyers in the dark. their position relative to competitors. This setup has proven to be extremely frustrating for many buyers over the past three years as dwindling inventory has sparked bidding wars in the majority of sales.

O’Connor was well placed to create an alternative. From 2016 until last fall, he was the founder and key leader of E Automotive Inc., which provides car dealers with access to a marketplace powered by online auctions. The company recently reported annualized revenue of US$80 million E Automotive raised $135.7 million in an initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange last November, making it worth total merchant turnover of over $1 billion (which has since slipped to $755 million).

O’Connor sold most of his personal stock just before the IPO. “I’m a startup guy, not a big company guy,” he said, adding that he holds “hundreds of thousands of shares” in E Automotive, which closed Thursday at $16.54. each. He invested some of the pre-IPO proceeds in Unreserved’s seed capital round, as did former Royal Lepage chairman Simon Dean and angel investor Jason Chapnik.

Judging by its ambition, O’Connor doesn’t expect Unreserved to remain a small company for very long. He predicts by the end of the year that he will have obtained 5% of the home sales market.

Consider what that would mean in the Ottawa market, where real estate agents associated with the Ottawa Real Estate Board sold 21,415 residential properties and condominiums last year for gross proceeds of $13.6 billion. Five percent of that translates to $680 million in gross sales, of which one percent, or not quite $7 million, would go to Unreserved.

Of course, O’Connor is building a national business, including a big move this year to Toronto. His roots are firmly in Ottawa, beginning with his childhood on a family farm along Dwyer Hill Road. Indeed, he had planned to build E Automotive in Ottawa, but ran into an unexpected problem.

“Shopify had every software developer in town locked down,” he said, referring to the e-commerce giant. “When we tried to hire them, they were all waiting for their shares to vest.”

O’Connor was referring to the three- or four-year process in which Shopify employees acquired full ownership of the stock options granted to them when they were hired. O’Connor therefore moved E Automotive to Toronto, where most of its more than 700 employees work.

the Delhi Police On Sunday, Aumkareshwar Thakur arrested, who allegedly created an app called “Sulli Deals” on which Muslim women were auctioned “online” last year, ANI reported. Thakur was arrested in the town of Indore in Madhya Pradesh and is being questioned by the police.

“Sulli” is a derogatory term used to refer to Muslim women. The “Sulli Deals” app was denounced on social media after targeting Muslim women in July. Delhi police had filed an initial information report on the case but had made no arrests in the six months since then.

Thakur is the first person to be arrested in this case. The 26-year-old resides in New York Township in Indore and has completed a bachelor’s degree in computer applications from the city’s Indore Academy of Professional Studies, according to PTI.

The city’s police chief, Harinarayanchari Mishra, told the news agency that Delhi police had yet to share any official information about it with Indore police. “We only learned from the media about the arrest of Thakur of Indore by the Delhi police,” Mishra said.

On Sunday, KPS Malhotra, the deputy police commissioner for intelligence fusion and strategic operations of the Delhi Police Special Cell, said Thakur was a member of a Twitter group that had been set up with the aim of online trolling of Muslim women, ANI reported. .

“He had developed the code on GitHub,” said Malhotra, according to PTI. “Access to GitHub was made with all the members of the group. He had shared the app on his Twitter account. The photos of the Muslim women were uploaded by members of the group.

Meanwhile, Thakur’s father Akhilesh Thakur claimed he knew nothing about the app and that his son was the victim of a set-up, PTI reported. He said that on Saturday afternoon two members of the Delhi police came to his home in civilian clothes and arrested Aumkareshvara Thakur.

Akhilesh Thakur said police took his son to Delhi by flight on Saturday evening. He added that he was in the nearby neighborhood of Ujjain when the police came to his home.

Online targeting of Muslim women

On January 1, a similar app called “Bulli Bai” – another derogatory term used to target Muslim women – emerged. Four people, including the alleged creator of this application, have been arrested in this case.

In both cases, images of hundreds of Muslim women were uploaded and posted to the apps and uploaded to the GitHub repository hosting service. Both apps were removed by the platform after outrage on social media.

A POPULAR Limerick bar that was auctioned last month has been sold.

The Track Bar in Garryowen went on sale in December and youbid.ie auctioneers said there was strong interest in the property.

The property was purchased at a reserve price of around € 200,000.

The pub was a popular spot for Treaty United fans after a game and is also where Dolores McNamara found out she had won the EuroMillions jackpot of 115 million euros.

It was at the Track Bar that Dolores verified her winning ticket and where her family and friends gathered to celebrate her life-changing victory.

Located directly across from Markets Field, the pub was often packed with football fans or people looking for a drink after a night out with the dogs.

The property comprises the Licensed Pub as well as a four bedroom apartment on the first floor which has its own kitchen, living room and balcony.

The main bar will be a familiar sight to many and has an open plan, solid oak bar, solid fuel stove, and all the appliances and accessories you would expect.

The second living room has a similar layout and includes a dart area, a solid mahogany bar, and its own set of toilets.

The bar had been open intermittently during the Covid-19 restrictions and regulars were only recently informed that it was going to go on sale.

A spokesperson for youbid.ie said: “Despite further foreclosure periods in 2021, the national auction platform Youbid.ie has continued to grow stronger with a total of twelve auctions in 2021, offering for sale over 500 properties, achieving a 96% success rate with average prices exceeding approximately 21% above their reserves.

“We look forward to a busy 2022 and will continue to hold monthly online auctions, 11 in total, with the first auction taking place on Thursday, February 17.”
