Summerland Museum auctions artifacts – Summerland Review
As part of a project to reorganize the storage of artefacts, the Summerland Museum is reviewing the relevance of the objects in its collection.
Since 2020, the museum has initiated a project to reorganize the storage of artefacts, using a recognized methodology mandated by the Canadian Conservation Institute (RE-ORG). In addition, items stored off-site were subjected to a review process that involved assessing their relevance to the mandate and criteria of the museum’s collections.
During this review, based on the museum’s collections policy, a number of items did not meet the collection criteria and the items were transferred.
Right now, there are around 20 items up for auction, said Julien Butler, the museum’s curator and archivist.
Disposal is a procedure that allows museum staff to enhance the quality of the collection by removing items that are damaged, duplicated, or unrelated to the museum’s mandate. It allows a better maintenance of the articles of the collection in the long term.
“It is intended to be undertaken with caution, deliberation, discretion and in the best interests of the collection,” states the museum’s collections policy.
Once the alienation procedure of an asset has been completed, a disposition process will begin with the provision of an asset of an asset to other public institutions (unless otherwise indicated in their accompanying documentation) so that ‘it can be kept in the public sphere. In some cases, the objects are transferred to local museums where the object is more relevant.
The Summerland Museum and Archives Society will be hosting an online auction from January 13 at 7 a.m. to January 27 at 5 p.m. The auction is open to the public. The shipping of any item will be the responsibility of the successful tenderer. Pickup information will be provided to bidders once the auction is closed.
The money raised in the auction will be used for the direct maintenance of the museum’s collections, such as improving the storage of the collection, the conservation of an artefact or the purchase of an artefact for the collection.
