Thai elephant tusk online auction starts at baht 25million
Chang Thongkhum Elephant Conservation Center in MahaSarakham Province will auction a pair of elephant tusks online with a starting price of 25 million baht.
ThanabadeePromsook, chairman of Chang Thongkhum (Thailand) Co, said the pair of tusks belonged to a male elephant, PhlaiBoonchai, who died aged 51 last month. The tusks measure 37 centimeters in circumference and 189 cm long.
According to him, the proceeds will be used to finance the construction of an elephant hospital, the expansion of elephant stables and the cultivation of grass and the purchase of elephants from owners who do not want to keep them. Profits will also be spent on elephant care, which costs more than 50,000 baht per month, as well as on treating sick and elderly elephants.

The elephant conservation center was founded in 2007. It takes care of 22 elephants, including around ten elephants who live at the center. Animals do not have to work or perform. Their staff feed them and let them exercise for their good health. (TNA)
