ELKINS – A name change and extended coverage area does not change the fact that the local United Way provides resources to many nonprofits throughout Randolph County.

The new Tygarts Valley United Way is gearing up for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, an event that was once known as the Randolph County Kick-Off Auction.

Last year’s annual event was replaced by an online auction format for the first time in 58 years due to COVID-19. The same will be true this year, as the Tygart Valley United Way live auction will be conducted entirely online.

The action kicks off on Saturday and will continue until the closing date of November 13 at 9 a.m. Purchased items can be picked up from November 15th.

Every dollar raised supports Centraide’s community campaign goal, which is set at $ 620,000 for 2021. This amount is typically around $ 100,000, but with four other counties including Tucker, Barbour, Marion and Taylor now included with Randolph, the fundraising goal increased.

“We have a team of 40 volunteers who visit different agencies, review their budgets, review the results of their programs and decide who our money goes to each year.” Tygart Valley United Way Regional Engagement Director Angela Daniels told The Inter-Mountain. “The money goes absolutely where it’s needed most.

“In Randolph County, a few that we have helped fund in the past are the Senior Center, Children’s Advocacy Center, Randolph County Family Resources, North Central West Virginia Community Action, Meals on Wheels, Humane Society and Catholic Charities. . There are 46 different programs in our five counties that we are helping.

The more than 200 items offered for auction include a basketball autographed by Bob Huggins, a soccer ball autographed by Neal Brown, an Apple Watch, a sofa, rocking chairs, a computer desk, a entertainment, a two night stay at Snowshoe, lots of custom pieces and more.
